So, earlier this year I posted about picking up a new used riding mower and
planning to fix it up and use it for a while.
Well I fixed it up and got it running and it was great for a few months. I started cleaning up the rust and touching up the paint, I even built a custom LED headlight for it, a n d life was good.
.
.
.
t
h

it broke.
So I fixed it again, and it was fine for a

until it broke again. I fixed it, then it broke... the v

I
used it. This cycle kept repeating over and over.
E

Ultimately the

It’s a shame because the engine still has extremely low hours and runs like a dream. For a while I even

The new one is also a Troy Bilt,
but it is a lighter duty version. Still for my purposes,
i
t should work great. Not to mention the thing is like showroom clean. The guy I got it from definitely went out of his way to keep it extremely well maintained. Honestly I could probably easily turn around and resell it for a few hundred more than I paid for it, but at this point I am just happy to have a functional mower again. Plus when I did the math if I can get the old one sold for close to what I am asking for it (which isn’
t much), then I will only be in the new one for roughly what it would have cost to buy a bagger for the old one

Mowers are one of those things that work great for a long time so long as you keep on top of maintenance. No one keeps on top of maintenance. One bad bearing or misaligned pulley will wreck the belt and wear out the others components, and then instead of replacing one component, you need to replace most of them.
I’ve been borrowing my neighbours’ push mower than they themselves have never actually used, which is probably a good thing. It came with their house, is old, somewhat broken, and has had almost all the safety systems disabled. The oil in it is basically tar but I don't care at this point. We both rent from the same agency. I figure when this mower pops, we might get a safer one.

Cheap, used mowers are best mowers. I picked up my Craftsman push mower, used, over ten years ago for about $75, and it still runs like a champ. Last year the push handle broke, as well as one of the large rear wheels. I had a hell of a time finding parts that didn’t cost as much as the mower did. Finally found a used mower place just north of me that had what I needed for about $20. Now, I may have to buy a new blade, as mine is notched pretty bad. Nice mower, by the way. I’d slap a Ferrari sticker on it and pretend I’m racing. Zoom-Zoom

I keep thinking about buying a new mower, then I talk to my BIL and Grandpa, who both bought new mowers last year.
I think I’ll just keep my old one thanks.

A buddy of mine had one, and the steering wheel was hilarious - it’d take a full half-turn before it would do anything. He said that the rag-joint was worn out, but he drove it like that regardless. Have you had to replace yours?

I actually havent had that issue with this one but maybe it’s because it has a manual steering box... in fact I don’t think it even has a rag joint.

Homemade go-karts are probably the scariest thing I’ve ever driven. I fear for the day electric engines are so prevalent they can easily be shoved into one.

Those 7 00 series are pretty good for half an acre or so. Grease your wheel spindles for easy turning every so often.
Its a Briggs or Kohler? I hate those Kohler courage engines where the carb mounts on the brittle heatshield and your hit a bump and it cracks, causing air to get past the carb causing engine hunting. I had to replace one 4 times for a relative .

I got a new lawn mower last year off of a friend for next to nothing . It looks like this:
But the last time I mowed, it also broke down... one of the nuts that adjusts the bar height came loose and I lost the nut portion. I’m guessing I might have to spend a few dollars buying a replacement nut.
I have a very small yard.

They both complain about the reverse lockout, the deck designs clog easily, they seem to get bogged down easier. My 25 yo Craftsman still runs like a champ and cuts awesome, I figure it’s cheaper to just throw a little money into it each year than buying a new mower I wouldn’t be happy with anyway.
I hope yours works great for you though! You got a great deal, enjoy it!

Yeah my original intention was to keep the old one and just gradually keep chipping away at all the issues it has. But the deal that fell into my lap was just too good to pass up. Also there are a few parts for the old one that it was going to eventually need that were surprisingly expensive. For example there is one specific pulley that probably needed to be replaced soon that is specific to this model and costs $170.
Plus some of the issues that the newer ones have like the reverse lockout can actually be fairly easily overcome. Apparently you can just unplug a connection and it deactivates it. The deck howerlver actually is one thing that I was concerned about because it’s obviously a far inferior design compared to the old mower. But , worst case scenario that is always something that can be replaced in the future if it turns out to be a major issue. Or I can a ways just use it for the next season and probably still sell it for a profit.

I just got a few better pictures of the new one...
Also I actually just got back from dropping of the old one. I didn’t expect it to sell so quickly. But I was straight up with the guy, and showed him all of the issues that I knew about. He seemed fairly handy so I don’t think he should have to much trouble keeping it going.
I already miss the larger seat on the old one.
